Effects of two different deep digital flexor tenotomy techniques on distal articular angles of equine cadaver forelimbs Ciência Rural
Dearo,Antonio Cezar de Oliveira; Rosa,Vitor Bruno Bianconi; Reichmann,Peter; Oliveira,Milton Luis Ribeiro de.
Deep digital flexor (DDF) tenotomy is a technique employed for years to treat selected disorders of the musculoskeletal system in horses. Although two different surgical approaches (i.e. mid-metacarpal and pastern) have been described for performing the procedure, in vitro quantitative data regarding the modifications induced by either technique on the distal articular angles is lacking. Therefore, the purpose of the study reported here was to investigate the viability of a proposed biomechanical system of induced-traction used to compare the two DDF tenotomy techniques by measuring the distal articular angles of equine cadaver forelimbs. Ten pairs of forelimbs were collected and mounted to a biomechanical system developed to apply traction at the toe...

Parasitological analysis of synovial fluid from dogs naturally infected with Leishmania sp. Ciência Rural
Silva,Mayara Nobrega Gomes da; Pereira,Deyverson Thiago Prates; Mistieri,Maria Ligia de Arruda; Lubeck,Irina.
The aim of this study was to verify the feasibility of synovial fluid (SF) analysis for the parasitological diagnosis of leishmaniasis in naturally infected dogs. Aseptic arthrocentesis of the tarsal and carpal joints of 40 infected dogs (158 Leishmania sp samples) was conducted after euthanasia. The SF smears were evaluated under optic microscopy and amastigotes were detected in the SF of 35 dogs (87.5%). Of the 93 positive samples, 53% were obtained from the tarsal joints, and 47% were obtained from the carpal joints. Amastigote forms were confirmed in one (17%), two (26%), three (31%) or all four investigated joints (26%). This research highlights the feasibility and high sensitivity of SF evaluation for the parasitological diagnosis of leishmaniasis in...

Patellar luxation and articular lesions in dogs: a retrospective: study research article Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Lara,J.S.; L.Alves,E.G.; Oliveira,H.P.; Varón,J.A.C.; Rezende,C.M.F..
ABSTRACT This study describes lesions that occur in the stifle joints of dogs with patellar luxation. These lesions are associated with the animal’s age, body weight, and degree of luxation. The rate of redislocation was also evaluated. The patellar lesions found include articular cartilage erosion, subchondral bone exposure, a flattened or concave patellar surface, and enthesophytes. Extra-patellar lesions included synovitis, osteophytes, blunting of the trochlear groove, an absent trochlea, erosion of the condylar margins, capsule thickening, a long digital extensor tendon injury, cranial cruciate ligament rupture, and meniscal prolapse. Such lesions were frequently found in animals with Grade II or III luxation who were aged 24 months or more, and they...

Rat hindlimb joint immobilization with acrylic resin orthoses BJMBR
da Silva,C.A.; Guirro,R.R.J.; Polacow,M.L.O.; Cancelliero,K.M.; Durigan,J.L.Q..
The objective of the present study was to propose an orthosis of light material that would be functional for the animal and that would maintain only the ankle joint immobilized. Male Wistar rats (3 to 4 months old, 250-300 g) were divided into 2 groups (N = 6): control and immobilized for 7 days. Rats were anesthetized with sodium pentobarbital (40 mg/kg weight) and the left hindlimb was immobilized with the orthoses composed of acrylic resin model, abdominal belt and lateral supports. The following analyses were performed: glycogen content of the soleus, extensor digitorum longus, white gastrocnemius, red gastrocnemius, and tibialis anterior muscles by the phenol sulfuric method, and the weight, fiber area and intramuscular connective tissue of the soleus...

Testing the effectiveness of tough resin systems for improving structural performance of joints in GRP ships. ArchiMer
Norwood, L; Caulier, C.
A major concern in any composite structure is its ability to resist peel and shear loading; this becomes a more difficult problem where long delays in laminating have occurred or when dissimilar materials are joined together. In the case of mine countermeasure vessels, adhesion between stiffener and hull becomes critical when the ship is subjected to underwater shock loading. In order to reduce costs and improve the hull-stiffener bond, tough resin systems based on urethane acrylates have been developed to replace the mechanical crack-stopping system currently employed. This paper describes the benefits of urethane acrylates in the frame-hull application discussing the level of improvement over the mechanical system.

Thermographic evaluation of exercise influence on the joints of the hind legs of healthy dogs MV&Z
Germano, Bruno; Navarro Alves de Souza, Alexandre; Maria Matera, Julia.
Many muscular contractions occur when an exercise is performed, transforming the chemical energy from food ingested into kinetic energy. No organism can achieve 100% efficiency in this process; the remaining is thus converted into thermic energy, generating heat that will be transported to superficial tissues and dissipated through the skin. Such energy release can be captured and measured by thermography, which registers infra-red emissions, indicating the body temperature. This study observed how the joints of the hind legs of healthy dogs thermally behave when submitted to different activities to evaluate how much each joint is required for the execution of the exercises. Twelve healthy dogs were submitted various activities: going up stairs, going down...

Two Unreported Cartilagines Sesamoidea in the Elbow of the Dog International Journal of Morphology
Gil G,Julio; Olivares P-M,Ricardo.
Two unreported sesamoid cartilages were found inside tendon of insertion of both muscle biceps brachii and muscle brachialis in the dog. This find adds remarkable facts envolving Anatomy, Comparative Anatomy and Clinic and Biomechanics of the elbow joint in the dog. Statistics also emphasize the importance of traumatological incidences on elbow joint in veterinary.
